The Santa Maria Refinery ceased operations in January of 2023, concluding nearly 68 years of safe, reliable and environmentally responsible operations on the Nipomo Mesa in California.
First announced in 2020, the shutdown of the facility is related to the planned conversion of our San Francisco Refinery in Rodeo to one of the world’s largest renewable fuels facilities.
We intend to remediate the Santa Maria site and expect this process to take several years.
We are working to secure all needed regulatory authorizations and permits from San Luis Obispo County and other regulatory agencies. We will then perform the remediation in accordance with those approvals.
The Santa Maria property encompasses 1,780 acres, of which only about 11% housed refining operations. The remainder land area is grazed by cattle, held as open space or used as a preservation area for wildlife in the Nipomo Dunes.
