10th Annual Girls in Aviation Day at Fontainebleau Aviation Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport Inspired 300+ Young Women to Explore the World of Aviation
MIAMI (Sept. 28, 2024) – On Saturday, September 28, over 300 young women were inspired to reach new heights at the 10th annual Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) hosted by soFLY Southern Tropics, Fontainebleau Aviation, a Skyservice company and Phillips 66® Aviation at Fontainebleau Aviation Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport (KOPF). This free event welcomed girls ages 8 to 18 to a day brimming with aviation excitement, where they explored captivating static aircraft and helicopter displays, tested their flying skills with hands-on flight simulators and engaged in countless STEM activities—all designed to fuel their passion for aviation.
The action-packed day included exciting aviation-themed giveaways, first responder demonstrations, music, art and delicious food. Attendees also connected through soFLY WAI’s Mentor Connect program, gaining insights into aviation opportunities that await them in the skies. Participants left inspired, ready to embark on their aviation journeys, energized by newfound knowledge and meaningful connections that will guide them through the skies ahead.
“My path has been shaped by the incredible women who came before me, and now I’m dedicated to creating that same inspiration for the next generation,” said Alexsandra Camargo, Fontainebleau Aviation Brand Manager and soFLY Vice President, as she reflected on her own journey in aviation. “When I see their faces light up as they explore this incredible field, I’m reminded that we’re not just shaping future pilots and engineers—we’re inspiring a generation of innovators who will redefine the skies.”
Attendees were inspired by a powerful lineup of female aviation leaders who shared their stories and experiences. Guest speakers included Jessica Matthews, soFLY President and co-founder; Alexsandra Camargo, Fontainebleau Aviation Brand Manager and soFLY Vice President; Sasha Lightbourne, soFLY Chief Strategy Officer; Tonika Johnson, Principal Operations Inspector, Federal Aviation Administration; Kristen Jurn, Air Race Pilot; Major Melissa Day, US Air Force Pavehawk Pilot; and Sierra Johnson, Aviation Account Specialist, Phillips 66® Aviation.
Jessica Matthews, soFLY President and co-founder, shared why she wants to lead the charge to inspire the next generation of female aviators. “I want a space where young women can see that the sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the beginning. It’s vital that young women see themselves in these roles; their unique perspectives will drive the future of our industry. Watching them engage with mentors and explore new horizons inspires me and reaffirms my belief in the power of connection and opportunity.”
“By supporting events like Girls in Aviation Day, we not only inspire the next generation but also help cultivate a community of future leaders. We are proud to be part of initiatives that uplift young women in aviation. It’s inspiring to watch these young girls embrace their potential and begin their journeys toward exciting careers in aviation,” said Sunny Lopez, Manager, Phillips 66 Aviation.
Fontainebleau Aviation provided an exceptional setting for Miami’s Girls in Aviation Day event, giving attendees a unique experience at a premier FBO facility. As a vital gateway into Miami, Fontainebleau Aviation is enhancing its client experience with the recent completion of a 40,000-square-foot hangar expansion project, addressing the growing demand for aircraft storage. Additionally, the FBO recently announced its expansion to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).
This Miami event marked the conclusion of a three-part GIAD series, which reached over 800 young girls across Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The series was organized by soFLY Southern Tropics, a nonprofit chapter of Women in Aviation International (WAI) representing South Florida and the Islands, to introduce young women and girls to exciting careers in aviation and aerospace. Through the dedication of partners like Phillips 66®, the FBO maintains a commitment to excellence in general aviation services.
